South Philly has all the conveniences of Center City, but at a fraction of the price. The streets can be small but the neighborhoods are all peak Philly. Neighborhoods like Bella Vista, Queen Village, and East Passyunk are all different, but offer a similar quaint, city feel. You’ll get to know your neighbors, sign petitions for block parties, and expect fireworks when the Phillies make the playoffs (HAHAHAHA!). Here you’ll feel close to the city and public transit, but without the tourists in Old City or the high-rises in Center City.
South Philly is also home to the famous Italian Market on 9th Street and an amazing number of Vietnamese restaurants on Washington Ave. And if you’re looking for Philly’s BEST cheesesteak you can go to the two tourist spots in the Italian Market… and then keep on moving south to Oregon Ave. Make a left and follow Oregon down to Front Street and come to a stop at Tony Luke’s. A hundred other Philadelphians will give you many other answers but never trust someone who names those other two…
The most common home is a 2 or 3-story rowhouse, but apartments and condos are also available. According to Zillow, the 2020 median home price in South Philly is $270,000 (compared to Philly-wide average of $188,000). If that is outside your price range, consider West Philly or Manayunk, which will give you a similar urban feel but at a lower price point.
